The tranquility of the Ciudad Kennedy Central neighborhood, in the locality of Kennedy, in the southwest of Bogotá, was interrupted this Thursday, July 16 after a shootout left several people injured.
According to the initial reports from the authorities, the incident occurred during an alleged attempted robbery that began in a restaurant located at carrera 78b with calle 38c Sur.
Sources close to this outlet indicated that two thieves, who were riding a motorcycle, entered the establishment and grabbed a bag, which apparently contained a large sum of money.
At that moment, and after committing the criminal act, they fled the scene. A person, who apparently was a member of the Army and was passing through the area, noticed what happened and reacted with their service weapon to repel the attackers.
At that moment, two people were injured; however, it is not yet known whether the victims were the thieves or other people passing through the area.
After hearing the gunshots, the residents of the area immediately alerted the Police, who arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and take control of the situation.
So far, the authorities suspect that the victim had withdrawn a sum of money minutes earlier from a bank branch in the area.
It is expected that in the next few hours, the Bogotá Metropolitan Police will release the official report of the incident.
Crime figures in Bogotá
Figures provided by Councilman Julián Sastoque reveal that between January and May 2026 crime increased in the capital of the country.
“Motorcycle theft in the early morning grew by 64.2% compared to the same period last year. Domestic violence increased by 45.7% at night and 33.5% in the early morning, while personal injuries rose by 42.4% in the early morning,” explained the Bogotá councilman.
He concluded: “Calls about explosives increased by 48.2% at night and 37.2% in the early morning between 2024 and 2025. Reports related to narcotics rose by 18.9% in the early morning and kidnappings increased by 26.2% at night.”
