The government of Abelardo de la Espriella will immediately restore relations with Israel, announced this Wednesday the foreign minister of that country, Gideon Sa’ar. The announcement was made after the meeting in Washington D.C. between the representative of the Hebrew government and Omar Bula, the foreign minister appointed by the elected president.
“We outlined a very detailed roadmap for the full and immediate restoration of diplomatic and economic relations between Colombia and Israel following the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella on August 7,” said the Israeli foreign minister.
According to Sa’ar, both countries will designate and send ambassadors immediately. It is worth remembering that President Gustavo Petro broke relations with Israel in 2024 and immediately expelled its representative, Gali Dagan.
In addition to restoring relations between both countries, according to the Israeli foreign minister, several agreements were made: mutual visa requirements will be lifted and Colombia will open an embassy in Jerusalem. This last point shows the closeness that the new administration will have with Benjamin Netanyahu, since normally diplomatic representations are located in Tel Aviv, as Jerusalem is a territory in dispute with Palestine.
“Colombia was one of Israel’s great friends, and that friendship will be stronger than ever,” said Gideon Sa’ar in the tweet with which he reported the main conclusions of his meeting with Omar Bula.
Bula joined yesterday the delegation of the new government, which is led by Vice President José Manuel Restrepo. This delegation has met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, other U.S. authorities, and multilateral banking officials.
