The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) issued red and orange alerts for high temperatures in different areas of the country for this Friday, July 17.
According to the bulletin issued in recent hours, “the maximum temperatures could approach and even exceed normal values for this time of year”.
High temperatures for this Friday, July 17
The regions that could register high temperatures for this holiday weekend in the country are Caribbean, Andean, and Orinoquía.
On the other hand, the departments with the highest probability of registering red or orange alerts due to the trend of sunny weather are:
- La Guajira (red)
- Cesar (red)
- Magdalena (red)
- Atlántico (red)
- Bolívar (red)
- Sucre (red)
- Córdoba (red)
- Norte de Santander
- Santander (red)
- Antioquia (red)
- Tolima
- Huila
- Arauca (red)
- Casanare (red)
- Meta
- Vichada (red)
Regarding what was indicated by Ideam, the highest temperatures are expected in “the inter-Andean valleys of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers“.
According to official reports, the combination of high temperatures and high humidity levels could “favor a thermal sensation higher than the actual temperature” in the morning hours of this Friday, July 17.
“Conditions could occur moderately in wide sectors of the Pacific regions,” they added.
Regarding the wind variation, “moderate speeds are expected with greater intensity in the Caribbean region“.
The national forecast from Ideam for the coming hours states that “mostly dry conditions will persist in wide sectors of La Guajira, central and northern Sucre, central and northern Bolívar, Atlántico, central and southern Magdalena and Cesar“.
“In the Colombian Caribbean Sea, dry weather conditions and little cloudiness in most of the basin,” reads the official bulletin.
Regarding the Andean region, the official report indicates that dry conditions will be in “central and eastern Antioquia, central and eastern Caldas, Tolima, northern and western Cundinamarca, central and western Boyacá, Quindío, western Norte de Santander, southwestern Santander and central Huila“.
The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) reiterates the “permanent monitoring of atmospheric conditions in the national territory with the purpose of anticipating possible risks associated with high temperatures“.
Weather forecast for the main cities of the country
- Barranquilla: persistence of dry weather and maximum temperature of 34°C.
- Cartagena: partly cloudy sky with predominance of dry weather and maximum temperature of 35°C.
- Bucaramanga: dry weather is expected with maximum temperature of 28°C, and some drizzles are not ruled out in the afternoon.
- Medellín: predominance of dry weather and drizzles are also not ruled out during the day. Maximum temperature of 30°C.
- Tunja: possible drizzles and partly cloudy sky this Friday, July 17. Temperature of 18°C.
- Cali: although the estimated maximum temperature is 33°C, possible rains are expected in the afternoon hours.
Therefore, Ideam recommends citizens stay well hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure during the hours of highest radiation, and pay attention to people with chronic illnesses to avoid any harm.
