The commemoration of Independence Day will have a change this year that will set a precedent in Bogotá. The traditional military parade will leave the corridors where it was historically held to move for the first time to the localities of Bosa and Ciudad Bolívar, a decision that modifies the usual development of one of the country’s most representative patriotic acts.
Although the Government has already confirmed the new setting for the celebration, several key aspects remain pending for those planning to attend. The final route, road closures, alternate routes, and security measures will be announced by the authorities in the coming days.
Bosa and Ciudad Bolívar will be the setting for the celebration
President Gustavo Petro confirmed the change through his X account, from where he invited the public to participate in the event. “On July 20 in Bosa and Ciudad Bolívar I invite you to come to merge the people and military forces in a message to the stars, Ad Astra, the tricolor flag will be the greatest symbol of freedom and human knowledge,” wrote the president.
With this decision, the parade will reach the south of the capital for the first time. The information known so far indicates that Villavicencio Avenue will be the main corridor through which the celebration will advance, although the official route has not yet been revealed.
For decades, this event was held on traditional roads in Bogotá, such as Boyacá Avenue and the stretch between Primero de Mayo Avenue and José Celestino Mutis Avenue. The move represents a shift in focus to bring the commemoration to areas that had not previously hosted the military parade.
What is known about the schedule and changes of the event
The entities responsible for the organization have not yet confirmed the official schedule. However, sources from the Military Forces indicated that the parade would take place in a time slot similar to previous years, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. This information is still pending confirmation.
Another anticipated change is related to the format of the parade. According to the information known, the exhibition will have a lower participation of military equipment compared to previous editions, which implies a modification in the traditional staging of this celebration.
Logistics will also be one of the main challenges of the day. So far, road closures, access points for the public, and alternate routes to manage the flow of attendees in Bosa and Ciudad Bolívar have not been announced.
It is expected that the Ministry of Defense, the Military Forces, and the Bogotá Mayor’s Office will soon provide all operational information.
These announcements will allow defining the official route, mobility measures, and security devices for an edition that will also be the last organized during President Gustavo Petro’s government before the administration change scheduled for August 7.
